Europe Puts A Homegrown Rocket Into Orbit 

What does it take to build an orbital rocket outside the established space powers? A German startup has now demonstrated one path, reaching orbit on its second flight.

Isar Aerospace has successfully sent its Spectrum rocket into orbit, demonstrating a privately developed launch system from European soil. The rocket lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway and deployed its payloads after reaching low Earth orbit, making the mission a significant step for Europe’s emerging commercial launch industry.

Spectrum is a two-stage rocket designed to carry satellites and other payloads to low Earth orbit. It stands about 28 metres tall and uses the company’s Aquila engines, which burn liquid oxygen and propane. The vehicle also uses carbon-fibre composite structures to reduce weight, while additive manufacturing is used for some complex engine components. Much of the rocket’s propulsion, structures, avionics, and other systems are developed and manufactured in-house, giving the company greater control over the vehicle and its production.

The flight also served as a technology validation after Spectrum’s first orbital attempt ended shortly after liftoff in March 2025. For its second flight, the rocket carried six CubeSats and an in-orbit technology demonstration. Unlike a purely developmental test, the mission was therefore expected to demonstrate both the vehicle’s ability to reach orbit and its capability to deploy actual payloads. The successful flight provides the company with flight data across the complete launch sequence, from liftoff and stage operations to orbital insertion and payload deployment.

The development is significant because Europe has historically depended on a relatively small number of established launch systems and overseas providers for access to space. Commercial rockets such as Spectrum could add another option for launching satellites, particularly as demand grows for Earth observation, communications, scientific, and defence missions. The company is also working towards higher-rate rocket production and additional launch infrastructure as it moves beyond the demonstration stage.

“Germany has spaceflight capabilities,” says the country’s Ministry for Research, Technology and Space on X, praising a “milestone that impressively demonstrates our country’s innovative strength and technical expertise”.
