Power Modules Target Compact Defence Systems

How can defence systems add more electrical capability without increasing size and weight? Modular DC-DC converters target higher power density within SWaP constraints.

Vicor will showcase high-density DC-DC converter modules designed to power modern defence systems where space, weight, and electrical demands are tightly constrained.

The modules can reduce the size and weight of power conversion hardware while supporting higher electrical loads. This is particularly relevant to land defence platforms, where increasing electrification is adding power requirements without giving designers more room or payload capacity.

Instead of relying on bulky, application-specific power subsystems, the portfolio uses modular building blocks for different stages of the power delivery network. It covers conversion from high-voltage inputs down to 270V and 28V MIL-STD buses.

The portfolio includes M-grade power modules and VITA/SOSA-aligned power supplies for defence applications. This modular approach allows power architectures to be built around different conversion requirements rather than designing a separate custom subsystem for each platform.

The modules are also designed for rugged defence environments and can be evaluated against standards including MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-810. This covers requirements related to aircraft and vehicle power, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental conditions.

The approach can help defence designers build power systems that occupy less space and add electrical capability without proportionally increasing platform size or weight. The modular architecture also provides flexibility to adapt power delivery as platform requirements evolve.
