A thermal sensor helps vehicles detect people, animals, cyclists, and obstacles in darkness, rain, fog, and low visibility.
LYNRED has launched the CAPT640, a thermal imaging sensor for automotive applications such as night vision and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The sensor is designed to detect pedestrians, cyclists, animals, and other obstacles in conditions where visible-light cameras can be affected by darkness, headlight glare, backlighting, rain, or fog.
The CAPT640 uses microbolometer technology with a 12-micron pixel pitch and a VGA resolution of 640×480. It converts thermal energy emitted by objects and living beings into a digital image through an optical system. Its dynamic range and thermal sensitivity support image capture and obstacle detection without additional lighting.
The CAPT640 is offered as a bare die rather than as a complete thermal imaging module. This allows automotive suppliers to integrate the sensor into their camera designs and manufacture systems at volume. The sensor can be integrated into cameras positioned on the vehicle’s front grille, windshield, or roof.
The sensor is intended for night vision systems and can also be combined with visible-light cameras, RADAR, LIDAR, and other sensors for applications such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), ADAS functions, and autonomous driving systems.
The CAPT640 complies with IATF 16949 and AEC-Q100 Grade 3. AEC-Q100 Grade 3 covers an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. According to LYNRED, the product has passed more than 30 tests across different production batches, covering approximately 3,000 components. These include temperature cycling tests at different temperatures, both during operation and when the device is powered off.
IATF 16949 compliance enables LYNRED to provide customers with a Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) that follows automotive industry requirements. The company obtained its IATF 16949 certification in late 2025 and said it was the first European thermal imaging manufacturer to obtain the certification.
The company claims that the CAPT640 is being used in projects with automotive suppliers and manufacturers. The company also expects the sensor to support vehicle manufacturers in preparing for regulatory requirements in the United States, Europe, and Asia, including FMVSS 127, Euro NCAP, and UNECE requirements.
