Rethinking IIoT with Bespoke Hardware and Software

Ubiqedge is combining in-house modular hardware and software to make IIoT more flexible, scalable, and application-ready.

Developing industrial internet of things (IIoT) solutions usually involves combining devices made by different vendors, including gateways, sensors, communication devices, and software. Customisation of the above-mentioned components depending on the application may take much time and restrict flexibility. Ubiqedge is addressing this challenge by building its own integrated hardware and software platforms: KLEON and SAMASTH.

KLEON is the company’s modular IIoT hardware platform, designed to connect with equipment such as energy meters, PLCs, pumps, motors, controllers, and environmental sensors. Rather than offering a fixed gateway configuration, it can be adapted to the requirements of different deployments using different processors. It also supports connectivity technologies such as 4G, Wi-Fi, LoRa, RF, and Ethernet, along with industrial interfaces including Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, and RS485.

From the software standpoint, SAMASTH integrates the data collected by KLEON and other systems. The system provides functions such as dashboards, analytics, alerts, predictive analytics, reporting, and remote management of devices. Two-way communication is also implemented, which allows for remote control of connected devices and updating of their firmware.

An important feature of this architecture is the task allocation between edge and cloud. KLEON is capable of doing local data storage, processing, and control logic execution, whereas the SAMASTH system takes care of analytics, reporting, notifications, and fleet management. In this way, tasks such as scheduling of pumps can be performed even without internet connectivity.

The decision to develop both platforms in-house also gives Ubiqedge greater control over customisation. The company says its modular architecture can help take new applications to market in one to eight weeks, compared with nine to 18 months through conventional approaches involving off-the-shelf hardware or development from scratch.

The platforms are already being used across solar monitoring, water management, air quality, railway infrastructure and ready-mix concrete applications. Ubiqedge reports more than 37,000 devices and assets deployed across India.

Rather than treating every industrial application as a separate product, the company is building a common technology stack that can be configured for different requirements. Its larger ambition is to make KLEON and SAMASTH an infrastructure platform on which both Ubiqedge and its channel partners can develop new IIoT applications.
