Texas Instruments has developed a 2 kW four-phase interleaved buck converter reference design for high-power DC-DC conversion applications. The design converts a 48 V DC input into a nominal 12 V DC output and is intended for applications requiring high power density and efficient power conversion, including data-centre power distribution boards and non-isolated DC-DC converter systems.

The reference design uses a multiphase synchronous buck topology with coupled inductors. Compared with certain isolated converter topologies, the approach is intended to provide improved load-transient performance while simplifying control. The power stage is controlled using voltage-mode control implemented through a C2000 microcontroller.

The converter operates with a pulse-width modulation switching frequency of 200 kHz and an interrupt service routine frequency of 200 kHz. It achieves a peak efficiency of more than 98 per cent, supporting efficient operation in high-power and high-density DC-DC conversion systems.

The design also incorporates software tools for control-loop development and tuning. A software frequency-response analyser and compensation designer are provided to assist with analysing and adjusting the control loop. Software support is available for the microcontroller through a driver library, helping engineers develop and evaluate the voltage-mode control system.

Texas Instruments provides design resources including a design guide with verified performance data, assembly drawings, a bill of materials, CAD/CAE files, Gerber files, PCB layout data and schematic diagrams. A fully assembled board has been developed for testing and performance validation and is not available for sale. These resources provide engineers with a platform for evaluating high-power four-phase DC-DC conversion architectures for industrial and data-centre applications.
