This design reduces standby power consumption and improves charging efficiency in wireless earbud cases, helping extend battery life through optimised power management and regulated charging.

As wireless audio products become smaller and more portable, charging cases must deliver reliable power while preserving battery energy when the earbuds are not in use. Continuous current consumption during standby can gradually drain the case battery, reducing the time between recharges.
Texas Instruments (TI) has developed a reference designTIDA-050007 focused on reducing standby power consumption and improving charging efficiency in true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds. The reference design addresses this challenge through an efficient power-management architecture that supports controlled battery charging, reduced standby consumption and improved energy utilisation. It provides engineers with a practical starting point for developing compact charging cases for modern wireless audio devices.
The design is for Wireless Earbud Battery Charger to demonstrate an energy-efficient charging solution for wireless earbuds. The design accepts power through a USB input, manages charging of the case battery and delivers regulated power to the earbuds. It uses a microcontroller to monitor charging activity and control power-conversion operation according to system requirements. The architecture also supports a pass-through operating mode, allowing the input supply to power the downstream charging circuit without unnecessary voltage boosting when operating conditions permit. By reducing avoidable conversion losses, this approach helps improve overall power efficiency and extend the operating time of battery-powered charging cases.
It offers several features suited to space-constrained consumer electronics. According to the design specifications, standby current is below 20 µA under the documented test conditions, helping minimise battery drain when the system is idle. The case battery charging current can reach 1.5 A, while the design supports charging efficiency above 85% and charging-current accuracy down to 1 mA for the earbuds. Its power-management approach adapts to different operating conditions to reduce energy losses and maintain appropriate charging performance. These characteristics make the design relevant to TWS earbuds, wireless headsets, portable audio equipment and other compact electronics that require efficient battery charging, reliable power delivery and low standby consumption. The implementation also provides a useful foundation for engineers seeking to optimise battery life without compromising the functionality of a portable charging system.
Texas Instruments provides a range of technical resources alongside the design to support evaluation and implementation. These resources include a detailed design guide explaining system operation, circuit architecture and performance measurements, along with a bill of materials (BOM), circuit schematics, PCB layout information, Gerber files, assembly drawings and CAD/CAE files. The documentation helps engineers understand the design, select components, develop printed circuit boards and validate performance during product development. The reference design serves as an engineering resource rather than a commercially available assembled product.
