Reference Design for Eight-Channel 1kVA Class-H Audio Amplifier

The reference design combines Class-H envelope tracking with a Class-D amplifier to deliver high-output automotive audio while improving efficiency, reducing thermal dissipation, and simplifying system implementation.

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced the TIDA-020088 reference design, an eight-channel, 1kVA Class-H audio amplifier solution for premium automotive audio systems. The design combines the TAS6684-Q1 Class-D audio amplifier with the LM5125A-Q1 dual-phase synchronous boost controller to improve power efficiency, reduce thermal dissipation, and deliver high-fidelity audio output. It is intended to help developers build high-performance multi-channel automotive audio systems with a compact and efficient architecture.

The reference design uses Class-H envelope tracking, which dynamically adjusts the amplifier supply voltage according to the instantaneous audio signal. Unlike conventional Class-D amplifiers that operate with a fixed high supply voltage, this approach provides only the voltage required at a given moment. As a result, switching losses and heat generation are significantly reduced, improving overall system efficiency without compromising audio quality. The integrated Class-H control also eliminates the need for an external microcontroller to manage boost voltage tracking, simplifying system design.

The TAS6684-Q1 integrates Class-H control, current sensing, load diagnostics, and a low-latency audio path suitable for applications such as active noise cancellation (ANC) and road noise cancellation (RNC). The LM5125A-Q1 provides a programmable dual-phase synchronous boost converter with support for dynamic output voltage adjustment, while the MSPM0G3507-Q1 microcontroller enables system management and CAN-FD communication for automotive applications.

Designed as a complete evaluation platform, the TIDA-020088 reference design enables engineers to validate Class-H audio architectures before product development. Texas Instruments provides comprehensive design resources, including schematics, PCB layout files, bill of materials (BOM), assembly drawings, software, and technical documentation, allowing developers to accelerate prototyping and reduce design complexity. The reference design is well suited for premium automotive infotainment systems requiring multiple high-power audio channels with improved efficiency, lower thermal stress, and high-quality sound reproduction.
