Reference Design For Wi-Fi Enabled Smart Power Strip

Discover the future of home efficiency with Wi-Fi Smart Power Strip, utilising the revolutionary RL78/G13 microcontroller and ISL85003 regulator for unparalleled power saving and intelligent device management.

A smart power strip has become an essential device in modern homes. It is known for its ability to intelligently manage and save power for connected devices, such as a computer system with a TV peripherals alongside a set-top box and router, among others. The design of this Wi-Fi Smart Power Strip leverages the highly adaptable RL78/G13 microcontroller, known for its comprehensive range of capabilities and the efficient ISL85003 step-down regulator.

In a significant advancement for the technology industry, the Renesas RL78 Family has set new benchmarks in power efficiency, cost reduction, and miniaturisation of equipment. With its industry-leading low power consumption and an array of high-performance peripheral functions, the RL78 Family offers an operating current of just 37.5 μA/MHz at 32 MHz, alongside a minimal clock operation current of 0.355 μA. Introducing a SNOOZE mode, enhancing the pre-existing HALT and STOP low-power modes, allows for A/D conversion and serial communication to proceed. At the same time, the CPU remains in standby, activating only as necessary. This innovation is especially beneficial for battery-powered systems, significantly extending battery life. The RL78 Family boasts over 1000 product variants, with memory sizes ranging from 1 KB to 768 KB and package pin counts between 8 to 144, catering to a wide spectrum of applications in consumer electronics, automotive, industrial, and communications sectors.

Simultaneously, the ISL85003 and ISL85003A synchronous buck regulators from Renesas emerge as compact, highly efficient solutions for voltage regulation. Capable of operating across a 4.5V to 18V input voltage range and delivering a steady 3A current, these regulators demonstrate efficiencies of up to 95%. Housed in a small 3mmx4mm DFN package, they incorporate integrated high-side and low-side FETs, an integrated boot diode with Undervoltage detection, and several control and protection features, including overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal protection. The ISL85003 series is ideal for various applications, including network and communication equipment, industrial process control, multifunction printers, point-of-load regulators, standard 12V rail supplies, and embedded computing, thanks to its versatile features like adjustable output voltage, current mode control, and optional external synchronisation.

Renesas has thoroughly tested this reference design, which includes a Design Guide, Sample code, training videos and more. Please visit the company’s website for further information on this reference design. To explore this design in greater detail, click here.
