A compact inductive position sensor delivers accurate absolute positioning near electric motors, where magnetic interference, heat, vibration, and moisture can challenge conventional encoders.

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced the MCB RAIK045I MP, a single-turn inductive position sensor encoder designed for industrial motion-control applications where reliable positioning is required close to electric motors. Its inductive sensing principle makes the encoder immune to external magnetic fields, allowing it to maintain positioning performance in environments where magnetic encoders can experience accuracy degradation.
The encoder combines 16-bit resolution, repeatability of at least 14 bits, and rotational speeds up to 10,000 rpm in a compact 45 mm package. It is positioned as a cost-effective option for applications that need more precision than basic position sensors while avoiding the size and cost associated with higher-performance encoder solutions.

The MCB RAIK045I MP provides absolute accuracy of at least 10 bits, equivalent to 0.35°, supporting precise feedback in servo-controlled systems. Its high repeatability allows equipment to return accurately to previously defined positions, making it suitable for automated motion and actuator-control systems.
Its inductive architecture also improves suitability for harsh industrial environments. The sensor can operate despite external magnetic fields and is designed to withstand moisture, airborne pollution, vibration, mechanical shock, and temperature variations. A -40°C to +125°C operating range further allows installation near heat-generating electric motors without relying on magnetic sensing that may be affected by temperature.
The encoder measures 45 mm in diameter and only 6.6 mm thick, while weighing about 13 g. Its rotor weighs approximately 4.3 g, reducing rotational inertia and helping simplify integration into compact motion systems. The off-axis configuration supports hollow-shaft mounting, while the 360° electrical angle enables full single-turn position measurement.
The encoder targets robotics, motor drives, conveyor systems, and automated guided vehicles, where accurate position feedback is important. It can also be used for wheel-position control in cleaning robots, actuator positioning in solar-panel systems, and pitch and yaw control in wind turbines. Other potential applications include agricultural and off-road equipment, drones, hospital beds, surgical tables, and other automated machinery. The device uses SPI output, with Sin/Cos output available on request. It is RoHS-compliant, with samples and production quantities available.
