To design a 5G Force Risk Reduction (FR2) phased array antenna module (PAAM), over-the-air (OTA) testing is necessary for measuring parameters such as equivalent isotropic radiated power (EIRP) and effective isotropic sensitivity (EIS), along with the traditional radiation patterns. Hence, Rohde & Schwarz joined with Fujikura and Avnet have launched a new development kit for 5G millimeter Wave (mmWave) phased array antenna modules, which the company claims is ideal for prototype testing in an open environment. According to the press release issued by the company, the kit empowers system architects to prototype and optimize tuning parameters for 5G mmWave systems. The equipment claims to provide a highly compact environment for characterizing 5G antennas, modules, and devices within the 20 GHz to 50 GHz range.

According to the company’s claim, the kit is a compact far-field over-the-air (OTA) test system that utilizes compact antenna test range (CATR) technology. This unique system boasts an unmatched quiet zone size within a mere 0.8 m2 footprint. The company claims to guarantee exceptional quiet zone accuracy with the kit’s state-of-the-art reflector. The equipment claims to employ the indirect far-field method, which has been approved by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 5G OTA testing, ensuring reliable and accurate results. The kit offers enormous versatility in creating various test setups, delivering a highly accurate 20 cm quiet zone for precise measurements. The open design of the system allows for seamless compatibility with devices of different sizes and weights, eliminating any concerns when positioning and testing oddly shaped objects.
