the First Indian Healthtech Startup to Receive US FDA
Approval for an Air-Decontamination Medical Device
The air we breathe today can carry airborne pathogens, posing higher risks of infection. This includes drug-resistant bacteria, fungi, spores, and viruses. ICUs, operating rooms, laboratories, elder-care centers, and home-care settings for immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable due to patient movement, ventilation gaps, and high human activity. Continuous air-decontamination solutions that are clinically validated and effective in real time have been a critical unmet need.
Addressing this challenge, Biomoneta has launched Avata Rx, powered by its proprietary ZeBox microbicidal technology, now cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). This marks the first time an Indian company has received FDA clearance in the air-decontamination category.
The approval highlights India’s growing role in deep-tech innovation and represents a key milestone for Beyond Next Ventures India (BNV India), a Japan-based early-stage deep-science fund supporting research-driven startups focused on practical, scalable technologies.
Avata Rx traps and neutralises airborne microbes in real time, eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Independent studies, including research funded by the Department of Biotechnology and conducted at IISc, showed it can destroy over 10 million airborne SARS-CoV-2 particles within 5 minutes, making it one of the most validated air-decontamination technologies available.
Biomoneta’s systems are already deployed across ICUs, NICUs, operating theatres, procedure rooms, ambulances, tissue-culture labs, research labs, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, and change rooms, demonstrating measurable reductions in microbial load, improving patient safety, protecting healthcare workers, and preventing contamination-related losses in biomanufacturing.
With this launch, Avata Rx sets a new global standard for real-time air-decontamination, providing safer environments in healthcare, research, and high-risk settings.
