As automakers rethink charging, conversion, and traction control integration strategies, STMicroelectronics is bringing edge AI into automotive microcontrollers.

STMicroelectronics has introduced Stellar P3E, an ASIL D-compliant automotive microcontroller that combines high-performance real-time control with integrated edge AI acceleration in a single system on a chip. It brings deterministic control and adaptive intelligence together to enable more efficient, safer electrified powertrains.
The architecture integrates a multi-core cluster of Arm Cortex R52 plus processors with hardware-enforced virtualisation, ensuring freedom from interference between safety and non-safety workloads while consolidating multiple functions. This enables deterministic behaviour across complex control domains. An embedded ST Neural ART Accelerator, implemented directly in silicon, offloads AI inference from the main cores and enables real-time neural network execution at the actuation level. This supports AI-based virtual sensing, predictive diagnostics and anomaly detection without external hardware.
The device also features extensible xMemory based on phase change memory technology, offering higher density than conventional embedded flash while maintaining automotive-grade reliability. This supports evolving software features across the vehicle lifecycle and aligns with software-defined vehicle architectures.
By embedding AI inside the ECU, the controller enables high-fidelity virtual sensors that emulate position or thermal measurements in inaccessible locations. It can analyse current signatures and multi-sensor data to detect bearing wear, battery anomalies or thermal drift early. The integrated NPU also accelerates complex matrix computations for soft switching control, optimising switching frequency to improve drivetrain efficiency and extend range.
Luca R., GP and Auto MCU GM at STMicroelectronics, says, “Stellar P3E sets a new benchmark for automotive electrification by combining high-performance real-time control and edge AI in a single, ASIL-D compliant system-on-chip. This empowers our customers to deliver safer, smarter, and more efficient X-in-1 solutions for the next generation of electric vehicles.”
