AI Software Simplifies Oscilloscope Testing

Natural language interaction and AI-assisted analysis are simplifying oscilloscope configuration, measurement interpretation and test automation, helping engineers manage increasingly complex electronics testing workflows.

AI Software Simplifies Oscilloscope Testing

Oscilloscope testing is becoming increasingly complex as electronic systems incorporate faster interfaces, sophisticated power architectures and advanced embedded technologies. Engineers must navigate multiple instrument functions, configure measurements, interpret waveforms and develop automation scripts. AI-assisted test software is addressing these challenges by connecting large language models (LLMs) with measurement instruments, enabling engineers to perform these tasks through natural language instructions.

MXO AI Connect is a software solution developed by Rohde & Schwarz that integrates AI assistants with its MXO oscilloscope platforms. It allows engineers to describe measurement requirements in everyday language, which an AI assistant translates into relevant oscilloscope functions, configurations and actions. The software combines AI reasoning capabilities with instrument-specific technical knowledge to simplify test execution and analysis.

Unlike conventional remote-control solutions, the software connects natural language interaction with instrument documentation, measurement functions and automated execution. This enables engineers to move from defining a measurement objective to configuring the instrument and analysing the resulting data without manually navigating extensive documentation or writing every automation command.

One of its primary applications is oscilloscope configuration. Engineers can request specific measurement settings or describe a testing requirement, allowing the AI assistant to identify appropriate instrument functions and configuration approaches. This can reduce setup time, particularly when working with complex measurement requirements or unfamiliar instrument capabilities.

The key features are:

  • Supports Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot AI environments.
  • Uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for AI-to-instrument integration.
  • Supports VISA communication through HiSLIP, VXI-11 and TCP/IP.
  • Allows local deployment on an engineer’s PC or a shared laboratory host.
  • Maintains conventional front-panel operation while AI-assisted control is active.

The software also supports waveform analysis and measurement interpretation. AI models can help examine measurement results, identify waveform characteristics and assess relationships between different signal behaviours. These capabilities are relevant to electronics development, power electronics testing, embedded system validation and troubleshooting, where engineers frequently need to investigate signal integrity and circuit performance.

Another application is automated testing. AI agents can coordinate instrument control, analysis methods and software automation across multiple testing steps. They can make repeated adjustments to instrument configurations and automation code until the intended measurement objective is achieved. This can help streamline repetitive laboratory tasks and integrate oscilloscopes into broader automated test environments.

The software supports MXO 3, MXO 4, MXO 5 and MXO 5C oscilloscope families, along with R&S ScopeStudio. It is designed to connect AI capabilities with existing test equipment without requiring additional software installation on the oscilloscope itself.
