Mixed traffic, toll evasion and equipment failures can disrupt highway operations. Can AI-based monitoring help improve traffic flow, incident response and enforcement?

PRAMA has developed an indigenous Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to help improve traffic monitoring, incident response and enforcement on Indian roads, highways and toll plazas. The system combines video surveillance and artificial intelligence (AI) to help operators track vehicles, detect incidents and manage traffic from a central control room.
At toll plazas, damaged tags, incorrect vehicle classification and vehicles avoiding toll payments can cause revenue losses. Mixed traffic speeds, sudden lane changes and peak-hour congestion can also disrupt traffic flow. Better monitoring can help operators identify such problems, investigate violations and respond to incidents more quickly.
Bringing multiple monitoring tools onto one platform also helps operators manage traffic without switching between separate systems. However, performance depends on reliable connectivity, proper camera placement and integration with existing equipment. Dust, heavy rain and changing light conditions can also affect monitoring.
The system uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to record vehicle movements and help detect possible toll evasion. AI-based video analytics can flag accidents, stalled vehicles and traffic violations. Integration with weighing systems can help identify overloaded commercial vehicles.
Other features include Ranginview IP cameras, AI-Sense analytics and video management software. Body-worn cameras and mobile policing systems can also connect to a central command-and-control platform, helping enforcement teams monitor incidents and collect evidence.
The company says its solutions are designed and manufactured in India for local road conditions. Their ability to reduce toll losses, ease congestion and improve road safety will depend on how well they perform in real-world deployments.
