A new automotive diode series aims to protect 12 V vehicle electronics from high-energy transients while reducing component count, board space and overall system cost.

Littelfuse has introduced its TPSMD-FL FlatSuppressX TVS diode series, an automotive-grade range designed to provide load-dump protection for 12 V vehicle electronics. The AEC-Q101-qualified devices are intended to simplify protection against high-energy voltage transients that can occur when a battery becomes disconnected while the alternator is charging.
The new series targets several automotive applications, including zonal controllers, powertrain electronics, infotainment systems and other vehicle control modules connected to 12 V power rails. Littelfuse says the devices can handle up to 3,000 W of peak pulse power, while their low clamping voltage is intended to protect sensitive electronics from high-energy surges.
The components are housed in a surface-mount DO-214AB package, providing a low-profile option for automotive designs where board space is limited. Their low clamping voltage can also help systems meet the ISO 7637-2 Pulse 5b requirements without requiring additional protection devices, potentially reducing both component count and bill-of-materials costs.
According to the published specifications, the series includes protection features covering both transient and electrostatic-discharge conditions. These include 30 kV ESD protection through air and contact, along with ESD protection for data lines in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2.
The devices also undergo whisker testing according to JEDEC JESD201A, helping address reliability considerations for automotive electronics. Littelfuse describes the typical failure mode as a short resulting from over-specified voltage or current.
As vehicle electrical architectures become increasingly complex and electronic content continues to grow, protection components must balance robustness with space and cost constraints. The TPSMD-FL series is positioned as an option for designers seeking high-energy transient protection without adding unnecessary complexity to 12 V systems.
