Tracking and managing products in high-volume industries is often slow, error-prone, and costly. Companies struggle with inventory accuracy, theft prevention, expiration monitoring, self-checkout efficiency, and meeting strict regulations on product safety and transparency. UCODE X, NXP Semiconductors’ new RAIN RFID chip, addresses these challenges by reading and writing data more reliably, using less power, and working in flexible setups even on smaller tags.

The chip helps businesses in retail, logistics, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare store key product details like lot numbers, expiration dates, and recycling information directly on the tag while keeping operations fast and scalable. It supports regulatory requirements such as the EU Digital Product Passport and U.S. FSMA 204 making compliance simpler and more accurate.

UCODE X works with a wide range of RAIN RFID readers and writers thanks to its basis on the open GS1 Gen2V2 standard. It also includes privacy protections through the GS1 G2V2 Untraceable command. Its high read and write sensitivity speeds up inventory counts and tagging of hard-to-read items while flexible memory and configuration allow companies to tailor the chip to specific use cases. Smaller inlays reduce material use making tagging more sustainable.

“With UCODE X, we’re expanding what’s possible in RAIN RFID,” said Ralf Kodritsch, Senior Director, UCODE RFID at NXP. “This chip combines our most advanced RF performance with flexible memory and configuration options, supporting smaller, higher performing RAIN RFID labels. This means even the most challenging items, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food, can be tagged. It’s a major step forward for retailers, brands, and logistics providers looking to quickly increase RFID adoption.”

“Continuous overhead reading has reached a new level of maturity, and UCODE X is a key driver in that evolution,” said Danny Haak, Head of Product & Technology at Nedap. “Its industry-leading read and write sensitivity enables truly dependable, real-time inventory visibility. By integrating this capability into the Nedap Inventory Engine, we’re taking another major step from promising pilots to scalable, day-to-day operations, helping retailers prevent losses, optimize stock levels, and elevate the customer experience without adding complexity.”
