Can Brain Signals Drive Robotic Actions

Could brain waves replace joysticks and controllers? A platform demonstrates how thoughts alone may soon direct intelligent robotic systems.

BrainCo has unveiled what it claims is the world’s first integrated brain-to-robot platform, enabling users to control robotic systems using brain activity alone. Introduced at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, the platform combines a non-invasive brain-computer interface with AI-based intent decoding to translate neural signals into real-time robotic actions.

The development reflects growing interest in embodied artificial intelligence, where AI systems are embedded within physical machines capable of perceiving, reasoning and interacting with the real world. Rather than relying on handheld controllers or voice commands, the platform allows users to issue commands through an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset that captures electrical activity generated by the brain. AI algorithms then interpret the user’s intended action and convert it into executable commands for connected robots.

During demonstrations, the system enabled a robotic arm to perform tasks such as grasping and moving objects based solely on the wearer’s brain signals. According to BrainCo, the platform is designed to work with a broad range of third-party robotic hardware, including robotic arms, humanoid robots and quadruped robots, allowing developers to integrate brain-driven control into existing robotic platforms.

Beyond human-robot interaction, the company believes the technology could help address one of embodied AI’s major challenges: access to diverse, high-quality training data. By combining data from real-world robotic operations, human demonstrations and virtual simulations, the platform is expected to generate richer datasets for training intelligent robotic systems.

Founded in 2015 in Hangzhou, BrainCo develops non-invasive brain-computer interfaces, wearable technologies and intelligent prosthetics. “The embodied AI industry has made remarkable progress in improving what robots can do autonomously.
