Can India Build a Trusted Surveillance Silicon Ecosystem?

The launch of the Visora surveillance SoC family signals a step towards trusted, AI-enabled silicon designed to strengthen India’s secure surveillance infrastructure and semiconductor ecosystem.

India’s semiconductor ambitions are expanding beyond consumer electronics, with growing emphasis on trusted technologies for critical infrastructure. As demand rises for secure surveillance solutions across smart cities, transport networks and defence, indigenous semiconductor innovation is becoming increasingly important.

Against this backdrop, Singapore-headquartered StraitsMicro unveiled its Visora surveillance Camera System-on-Chip (SoC) family during a pre-silicon demonstration in Bengaluru. Rather than showcasing a finished chip, the company presented an FPGA-based proof of concept, offering an early look at the architecture before it progresses to production silicon.

“The successful pre-silicon demonstration of Visora is a significant milestone in our journey to build trusted AI-enabled semiconductor solutions for surveillance,” said Pankaj Sharma, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of StraitsMicro. “By bringing together India’s innovation ecosystem and Singapore’s semiconductor expertise, we aim to create globally competitive solutions for critical infrastructure.”

The Visora portfolio is designed to address different surveillance requirements. Visora Edge targets residential and small-business cameras, Visora Secure adds integrated AI acceleration for commercial deployments, while Visora Pro supports 4K, multi-camera applications for sectors such as defence, transport and smart cities. The range also includes a Network SoC for network video recorders.

Artificial intelligence is central to the platform, supporting capabilities such as motion detection, facial recognition, crowd analytics and advanced image enhancement. By processing AI workloads at the edge, the platform aims to reduce latency, lower bandwidth usage and improve data privacy.

Rather than moving directly to ASIC production, StraitsMicro is validating the architecture through FPGA demonstrations, allowing customers and partners to evaluate the technology before commercial silicon is developed. The company is also collaborating with Bengaluru-based semiconductor design partner Proxelera and distribution partner Aptronics, while leveraging Singapore’s manufacturing expertise.

“Our vision extends beyond developing a surveillance processor,” Sharma added. “We want to help build a trusted semiconductor ecosystem through collaboration across design, manufacturing and deployment.”

While commercial production is still some distance away, the launch of Visora reflects India’s growing focus on designing trusted semiconductor solutions for critical applications. If successfully brought to market, the platform could contribute to strengthening the country’s surveillance technology ecosystem while reducing reliance on imported processors.
