Chip Architecture Shifts To On Device AI

Can smartphone processors make AI more proactive without increasing power demands? A 2nm platform combines on-device intelligence with gains in computing, gaming, and imaging.

MediaTek has introduced a flagship smartphone platform built on a 2nm process, bringing higher computing performance and lower power consumption alongside on-device agentic AI capabilities. The Dimensity 9600 Pro was unveiled at MediaTek Tech Day in Delhi and is expected to power upcoming flagship smartphones.

The platform is designed to move smartphone AI beyond responding to individual commands. Its dual-NPU architecture and Dimensity Agentic AI Engine are intended to let devices understand context, anticipate requirements, and coordinate tasks across applications while keeping processing on the device.

Power efficiency is a key part of this approach. The chipset uses a 2+3+3 all-big-core CPU configuration, with two cores reaching 4.55GHz and three cores each reaching 4.35GHz. MediaTek claims up to 17% higher single-core and 15% higher multi-core performance than the previous generation, while multi-core power consumption is reduced by 61%.

The AI architecture includes a second-generation Super-Efficient NPU that reduces always-on AI power consumption by 40%. The NPU 1090 also delivers 51% higher large-language-model prefill performance and 55% higher token generation per watt, while supporting models with up to 30 billion parameters.

For graphics-intensive workloads, the G2-Ultra NX GPU provides up to 27% higher peak performance and 24% lower power consumption, with 18% faster ray tracing. The platform can support gaming at up to 185fps.

Imaging is handled by the Imagiq 1290 ISP and an AI Imaging Fusion Architecture. These support features including 60fps AI motion capture, 4K240 slow-motion video, 4K60 AI True Color Tone, 4K120 cinematic log, and 17EV imaging.

MediaTek has also introduced the Dimensity 9600M alongside the Pro variant, extending the platform’s AI, gaming, imaging, and computing capabilities to more flagship devices. The first smartphones using the two chipsets are expected to launch this quarter.
