A new single-coil fan driver simplifies high-power cooling system design with firmware-free configuration, smoother motor control, and enhanced protection for AI, industrial, and power applications.

Melexis has introduced the MLX90412-D single-coil cooling fan driver IC, expanding its fan-driver portfolio for higher-power thermal-management applications. Designed for code-free integration, the device enables engineers to develop cooling solutions for AI workstations, data centre power systems and industrial equipment without the complexity of MCU-based firmware development. With an integrated 2.2A drive capability, the IC supports larger cooling fans while reducing component count and shortening development cycles.

The MLX90412-D integrates motor control, configuration, and protection functions into a single device, allowing designers to configure fan-speed curves, frequency generator (FG) signal behaviour, and motor control parameters without writing software. This approach simplifies replacement of existing fan control solutions while lowering system complexity and bill of materials. The IC also provides a cost-effective alternative to three-phase fan control in applications where single-coil architectures are sufficient.
The device supports cooling fan designs up to approximately 18W at 12V and 36W at 24V, making it suitable for high-power thermal management systems. Typical applications include AI workstation GPU cooling, industrial power supplies, UPS systems, data centre infrastructure, industrial drives and electronics cooling in home appliances. The ability to operate larger blower fans can help designers improve cooling efficiency while reducing the need for multiple smaller fans.
To improve cooling performance and reliability, the MLX90412-D incorporates an updated motor-control algorithm that delivers smoother start-stop operation, stable low-speed performance and reduced acoustic noise. A revised proportional-integral (PI) control scheme helps maintain stable fan operation even at very low rotational speeds, while multiple configurable start-up profiles allow optimisation for different cooling requirements.
The IC also integrates programmable locked-rotor protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection and thermal shutdown to enhance system safety in demanding environments. Packaged in a compact DFN10 (3 × 3 mm²) form factor, the MLX90412-D targets designers seeking compact, reliable and firmware-free cooling solutions for next-generation AI and industrial electronics.
