A new rectangular ambient light sensor combines high sensitivity, IR detection, and ultra-low power in a compact package—ideal for bezel-less automotive displays and harsh environments.

Automotive-Grade Ambient Light Sensor

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has unveiled the industry’s first AEC-Q100 qualified ambient light sensor in a rectangular form factor. The new VEML4031X00 combines an ambient light sensor (ALS) and a high-sensitivity IR photodiode within an ultra-compact 4.38 mm x 1.45 mm x 0.6 mm surface-mount package — nearly half the width of earlier solutions. Its slim profile makes it ideal for tight spaces, such as bezel-less automotive control displays.

The key specifications include:

  • Supply voltage range: 2.5 V to 3.6 V
  • I²C voltage support: 1.7 V to 3.6 V
  • Ultra-low standby current: 0.5 μA
  • Wide operating temperature: -40 °C to +110 °C
  • Reliable performance in harsh environments

The sensor offers outstanding precision, with spectral sensitivity closely aligned with the human eye. An additional IR channel enables light source differentiation. With a detection range spanning 0 lx to 172,000 lx, the VEML4031X00 maintains accurate readings even in bright daylight. Its impressive sensitivity of 0.0026 lx/ct allows it to function effectively behind dark or tinted cover glass.

Applications include automotive infotainment systems, backlight dimming, interior lighting, rearview mirror dimming, and heads-up displays. The device integrates easily into designs via an I²C communication interface and includes an interrupt function for added flexibility. The sensor meets RoHS compliance, is halogen-free, and Vishay Green, with a Moisture Sensitivity Level of 2a and a floor life of four weeks per J-STD-020. It is now available in both sample and production quantities, with a lead time of 14 weeks.
