A compact development board combines location tracking, edge AI, and Matter and Thread support for IoT applications.
Nordic Semiconductor has released the nRF54L15 Tag, which is a small and inexpensive battery-powered development board designed for location aware and edge AI applications. This board supports Bluetooth Channel Sounding, making it compatible with Apple’s Find My and Google’s Find Hub networks.
It is built around the nRF54L15 wireless System-on-Chip (SoC), the 33mm board runs on a CR2032 coin cell battery supply. It comes with an integrated six-axis IMU, low-power accelerometer, environmental sensor, a user-programmable button, and an RGB LED. The developer can add other hardware components on the board such as additional buttons, external memory, buzzer, and additional LEDs.
This dual-antenna design supports Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, enabling precise distance calculation between devices. Beyond tracking, the board can also be used for item finding, proximity detection, secure access systems, and asset tracking eliminating the need for power-hungry GPS hardware.
Apart from being used for tracking purposes, the nRF54L15 Tag can also serve as an edge AI platform. Data from its onboard sensors can be used to perform gesture recognition, vibration monitoring, and anomaly detection, and this hardware is compatible with Nordic’s nRF Edge AI software that can run embedded machine learning models directly on the device. In addition to this, the board supports Matter and Thread.
For faster development, Nordic delivers the board equipped with the firmware, documentation, schematics, PCB layout files, Gerber files, and a complete bill of materials. The programming and debugging can be performed using Nordic development kits and SEGGER J-Link debuggers; over-the-air firmware updates are also supported.
