E-Pod: Engineering an Enclosed Electric Two-Wheeler

Can the E-Pod make enclosed electric mobility affordable for urban commuters?.

E-Pod is an enclosed electric two-wheeler by Jedlik Motors and is currently under development, with a prototype already built. It aims to provide urban commuters with an alternative to regular motorcycles and cars. This two-wheeler, which has been priced at ₹2.5 lakh, aims at enclosed mobility and cost-effective production.

In an exclusive interaction with Electronics For You, Raguram S K, founder of Jedlik Motors, shared insights into the development of the E-Pod.

Unlike conventional two-wheelers, the E-Pod features an enclosed cabin and is being designed with airbags to improve occupant protection. Its electronics architecture has required significant in-house development, including identifying suitable components and building key electronic systems from scratch. Formal safety testing is yet to be completed.

The vehicle is being developed for everyday city commutes rather than long-distance travel. Delivery and goods-transport fleets are also potential applications. The project has reportedly received more than 60 pre-trial registrations and three to four pre-bookings.

Manufacturing cost is a key consideration. The planned factory would use extensive automation, with the company estimating that a facility producing around 1000 vehicles annually could operate with just seven to ten people. This is a proposed manufacturing model, and its feasibility will need to be established as production scales.

Progress toward a minimum viable product (MVP) of the E-Pod is anticipated in May-June of next year with plans for an official launch in June-July of that same year. Bengaluru is the first city where the E-Pod will be tested and improved based upon user experience and input.

The base model of E-Pod is expected to cost ₹250,000 initially. “With additional models/versions being produced and at larger production volume levels we should see pricing drop to approximately ₹100,000-₹150,000,” says Raguram. The success of the E-Pod will be dependent on whether or not it can validate all aspects of the engineering, safety, manufacturing economics, and appeal to urban residents.
