The ASM330LHHX from ST Microelectronics is the first automotive-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) with ML capabilities. The ASM330LHHX IMU is a 6-axis module which houses a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope. The IMU module provides movement and altitude sensing which can enhance vehicle positioning and digital stabilization. The module has an embedded machine learning (ML) core and runs AI algorithms directly on the sensor thus, achieving extremely low latency. The module has a low power mode where the module consumes a current of less than 800µA with both the accelerometer and gyroscope running. The AEC-Q100 qualified sensor is suitable for applications which include precise positioning, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, and impact detection and crash reconstruction.

According to the company, the ASM330LHHX IMU module will enable faster adoption of automation with its ML cores. The power-efficient module can enable fast real-time response and sophisticated functions. The automotive-qualified module house a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope in a small package measuring just 2.5 mm x 3mm x 0.83mm outline. The 6-axis module can provide attitude and movement sensing for functions including vehicle positioning and digital stabilization.

The module has an embedded ML core that, a hardwired processing engine, runs AI algorithms directly on the sensor, thus, ensuring low latency between the vehicle’s response and the event. This improves the accuracy while reducing the processing power, therefore, lowering the energy requirement. The module has 2 modes, a power-saving mode and a high-performance mode, The power-saving mode is for running always-on applications like telematics, anti-theft systems, motion-activated functions, and vibration monitoring and compensation. The high-performance mode is for applications that require high accuracy and low latency, such as precise positioning, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, etc.

The AEC-Q100 qualified module offers great sensor stability and low noise over the extended operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. The IMU module is in production and comes in an LGA-14L package.
