Flat-Clamping TVS Diodes Protect Aviation Power

New high-reliability TVS diodes target 270–800 V DC aviation and eVTOL power systems, combining high surge handling with controlled clamping to protect sensitive semiconductor devices.

Flat-Clamping TVS Diodes Protect Aviation Power

Littelfuse has introduced the AK-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS Diodes, an axial-leaded transient voltage suppression solution designed for high-voltage DC aviation power systems. The devices address transient overvoltage events in aircraft and eVTOL electrical architectures, where tightly controlled clamping is important for protecting sensitive power electronics.

The series is designed around Littelfuse’s FlatSuppressX technology, which uses a foldback/snapback current-voltage characteristic. Unlike conventional TVS devices whose clamping voltage can rise as surge current increases, this approach maintains a near-constant, low clamping voltage during fast transients and high-energy surge events. This helps reduce the risk of latch-up in Solid-State Power Controller (SSPC) modules and other high-voltage semiconductor devices.

The key features are:

  • 270–800 V DC architecture support
  • 6 kA, 8 kA, and 10 kA variants
  • 8/20 µs surge-current test basis
  • 100% MIL-STD-750 screening
  • Halogen-free, RoHS-compliant construction

The series is offered with 6 kA, 8 kA, and 10 kA surge-current ratings at 8/20 µs, allowing designers to select protection according to the surge requirements of the power architecture. The devices are also 100% screened using MIL-STD-750 test methods, including visual inspection, surge testing, temperature cycling, and high-temperature reverse-bias testing. LIT045.

For aircraft platforms transitioning toward 270–800 V DC power architectures, the controlled clamping behaviour can provide greater flexibility in semiconductor selection. Designers can potentially use lower-voltage-rated semiconductor devices while retaining transient protection, helping improve circuit design efficiency.

The devices are intended for aerospace and defence power trains, SSPC circuits, eVTOL platforms, next-generation aircraft electrical systems, and high-reliability avionics DC power rails. Their axial-leaded package is halogen-free, RoHS-compliant, Pb-free E4 terminated, and supports both reflow and wave soldering.   The series is supplied in bulk packaging, with 56 pieces per box, and samples are available through authorised distributors.
