Nexperia has unveiled a new series of USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) controller ICs designed for fast, efficient charging across a wide 18–140 W power range. With this release, the company becomes the only semiconductor supplier to offer every component required to build high-performance USB charging adapters—streamlining development and speeding time-to-market for consumer device manufacturers.

The key features are:

  • Programmable Type-C source capability (default, 1.5 A, 3 A)
  • Integrated VCONN power supply and switch
  • SOP’ communication for E-Marker cable detection
  • Multi-protocol support: USB BC1.2 DCP, legacy & proprietary charging
  • Wide voltage range: 3.3 V to 29.4 V
  • 30 V tolerance on CC1/CC2 pins (short-to-VBUS protection)
  • Low power mode operation

This USB Type-C Power Delivery controller enables flexible and efficient PD charging designs, supporting a wide range of power levels from 18 W to 140 W—ideal for modern adapters and chargers. It offers broad compatibility with high-performance mobile charging protocols, ensuring faster and more reliable charging experiences. Safety is enhanced through comprehensive fault protection features, including over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, and thermal protections, along with safeguards against voltage shorts and line surges. The integration of key components like drivers and discharge circuitry helps reduce overall BOM cost. Additionally, the controller supports smart power sharing in multi-port configurations and allows for custom logic and feature extensions via its embedded MCU and programmable GPIOs, making it highly adaptable for diverse USB power applications.

The new single-port USB PD controllers—NEX52041 and NEX52080—feature integrated microcontrollers (MCUs) with 16 kB and 32 kB of MTP-ROM respectively. These embedded MCUs allow for flexible feature customization and firmware updates, ensuring long-term compliance with evolving USB PD standards. In addition to USB PD, both controllers support multiple D+/D− fast-charging protocols, enabling broad compatibility with legacy and current devices, from smartphones to laptops.

Packaged in compact 4 mm x 4 mm QFN-16 and QFN-24 form factors, the controllers also include programmable GPIOs and I2C interfaces—ideal for multi-port charger architectures where efficient communication and smart power distribution are essential.Whereas similar controllers often rely on extra external components for protection, they integrate up to 30 V overvoltage tolerance directly on connector pins. This built-in resilience cuts BOM cost and improves overall robustness.

Engineered with a constant-voltage (CV) and constant-current (CC) control loop, these controllers support optocoupler-based feedback systems and interoperate seamlessly with a range of DC/DC and AC/DC converter topologies. When paired with the company’s complete portfolio—including AC/DC controllers, MOSFETs, GaN FETs, and ESD protection devices—designers can rapidly create turnkey USB adapters for consumer charging applications.
