Developers can now use tools for writing code, adding machine learning, and building safer systems without paying license fees.

Embedded developers can now use Microchip’s MPLAB XC Pro Compilers and MPLAB Machine Learning Development Suite without paying license fees. The move can help startups, students, engineering teams, and product developers reduce development costs while building embedded systems with Microchip MCUs and MPUs.
The free tools allow developers to optimize code, reduce memory usage, improve execution speed, and add machine learning capabilities to resource-limited devices. This can help companies developing IoT devices, smart sensors, industrial systems, and other embedded products bring designs to testing and deployment faster.
Earlier, the MPLAB XC Pro Compilers were available through paid license options. The compilers generate architecture-optimized code for Microchip’s 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit microcontrollers and microprocessors, helping developers improve application performance without increasing hardware requirements.
The company has also made the MPLAB Machine Learning Development Suite Model Builder available at no cost. The tool works as a plug-in for MPLAB and Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code), allowing developers to create machine learning models and generate optimized code for applications such as sensor-based recognition and edge AI.
The free access also covers MPLAB XC Functional Safety Compilers, which support safety-critical designs. Developers can start safety-focused development without upfront licensing costs, while certification documents and additional support are available when required.
Microchip will continue providing compiler updates and technical support for related queries at no additional cost. The tools are available for download through the company’s website.
