RECOM R-78Kxx switching regulator offers savings of energy, board space, and cost, by eliminating heatsinks and their assembly overheads

RECOM R-78Kxx is a series of high-efficiency three-terminal switching regulators. The R-78 series is a replacement for the company’s existing three-terminal, TO-220 style linear regulators and offers savings of energy, board space, and cost, by eliminating heatsinks and their assembly overheads. The R-78 series can work with input voltage up to 36V and offers efficiency up to 96%. The three-terminal switching regulators are voltage regulators that use a switching topology to regulate the output voltage. They typically consist of a power switch, an inductor, a diode, and a capacitor. The power switch rapidly switches on and off, creating a high-frequency signal that is passed through the inductor to create a stable output voltage.

The R-78K series feature under-voltage lockout and short-circuit protection with automatic recovery and can meet EN 55032 class B EMC specifications with a simple input filter. The 0.5A and 1A rated versions are in a SIP-3 miniature package, with a footprint of 11.5 x 7.55mm and a height of 10.2mm, while the 2A version is in an 11.5 x 8.5mm footprint and 17.5mm high, again in a SIP-3 arrangement. The switching regulators are rated for temperatures up to 90°C with no derating.

“This is a significant upgrade to our economical and successful R-78 series, making them even more versatile with more output options and a wider input and operating temperature range,” comments Matthew Dauterive, MSc, DC/DC Product Manager of RECOM.
According to the company, the R-78K series switching regulators feature multiple safety features including under-voltage lockout and short-circuit protection with automatic recovery and can meet EN 55032 class B EMC specifications with a simple input filter.
