High power In Compact Industrial Systems

What if industrial power supplies no longer needed extra space for safety margins? A new design questions current engineering practices.

Industrial control systems often struggle with limited cabinet space, heat buildup, and short power surges that force engineers to oversize power supplies. These issues increase cost, complexity, and energy use. RECOM addresses these problems with its RACPRO1-S480, a compact 480W DIN-rail power supply designed for high power density, wide temperature operation, and short-term overload handling.

The unit delivers 480W with natural convection cooling from –40°C to +60°C and fits into tight panels with a width of just 52mm. It can supply 576W up to 45°C and handle short 720W peak loads for five seconds, allowing designers to avoid oversizing for brief surge demands from motors, actuators, and control electronics.

For applications with regenerative loads, such as decelerating motors, the power supply offers high return-voltage immunity, preventing shutdown or damage caused by back-feeding energy. Adjustable 24V and 48V outputs, along with constant-current and parallel modes, support a wide range of industrial loads and scalable system designs. A DC-OK signal simplifies system monitoring.

The wide input range supports both universal single-phase AC and 88V to 370VDC, making the supply suitable for factory automation, process control, transportation systems, and energy infrastructure. Low no-load power consumption of under 4.2W helps reduce standby energy losses.

High efficiency of up to 95% limits heat generation, improving reliability and enabling a long operating life of nearly 98,000 hours at 40°C. Tool-free DIN-rail mounting and push-in connectors reduce installation time. Compliance with industrial safety and EMC standards supports use in regulated and electrically noisy environments.

“These market-leading DIN-Rail PSUs are ideal for a wide range of demanding industrial applications such as factory and building automation, energy distribution, test and measurement, infrastructure, data/telecom, and more”, comments Michael Peters, Business & Product Manager of RECOM.
