High-Power Resistors Shrink To 0402 Size

A new compact resistor series combines high surge resistance, 0.33 W power handling, and thermal stability for dense automotive, industrial, consumer, and AI server electronics.

High-density electronic designs can now gain higher power handling without increasing resistor footprint, with the SDR01 Series high anti-surge chip resistors delivering a rated power of 0.33 W in the 0402 (1005 Metric) package. The devices are designed by ROHM for applications where board space is limited but components must withstand surge conditions and maintain reliable operation.

The compact resistors target automotive, industrial, consumer electronics, and AI server applications, particularly power supply, control, and peripheral interface circuits. Their small footprint can allow designers to replace larger resistors or consolidate multiple components, helping reduce PCB area and component count while retaining the reliability required for anti-surge applications.

  • Resistance range: 10 Ω to 2.2 MΩ

The series addresses a growing requirement for compact components that can handle higher power as electronic equipment becomes more functional and densely populated. Power supply circuits and interface sections can experience surge and electrostatic discharge (ESD) events, creating demand for resistors that combine compact dimensions with high-power and surge-handling capability.

To achieve the higher power rating, the SDR01 Series uses optimized resistive-element and electrode designs. This approach enables the 0402-size devices to maintain their 0.33 W rated power up to a terminal temperature of 125°C, making them suitable for high-density mounting and locations near heat-generating components. The higher temperature capability can also ease thermal design requirements.

The resistors provide a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±100 ppm/°C for resistance values from 10 Ω to 2.2 MΩ. Limiting resistance variation with temperature helps maintain stable circuit behavior and supports the development of compact power supply and interface circuits.

Mass production of the SDR01 Series has begun, with a stated sample price of $0.04 per unit, excluding tax. The components are available through the manufacturer’s online store and distributors including DigiKey and Farnell.
