High-Power Resistors Speed Design Validation

Evaluation-ready resistor kits combine multiple resistance values, high power ratings, automotive qualification, and optional test boards to simplify component selection for demanding electronics designs.

Design

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced four thick film resistor sample kits aimed at speeding component selection and validation in high-power electronics designs. The kits cover the Vishay Sfernice D2TO20, D2TO35, DTO35, and DTO35/D2TO35 resistor series, with power ratings up to 35 W and resistance values spanning 1 Ω to 47 kΩ.

The kits are intended for automotive, industrial, power electronics, and other high-reliability applications where designers need to evaluate thermal and electrical performance before finalising a design. The resistors are AEC-Q200 qualified, helping reduce additional qualification work during development.

The key features are:

  • Up to 35 W power rating
  • 1 Ω–47 kΩ resistance coverage
  • AEC-Q200 qualified construction
  • Optional PCB evaluation boards
  • DPAK and D²PAK package options

The D2TO20 sample kit (ACCLFFD2TO20SPLKIT) provides 20 W devices in a TO-263 (D²PAK) package, while the D2TO35 sample kit (ACCLFFD2TO35SPLKIT) offers 35 W devices in the same package. The DTO sample kit (ACCLFFDTOSPLKIT) provides 35 W resistors in a TO-252 (DPAK) package. A combined DTO D2TO sample kit (ACCLFFDTOD2TOSPLKT) contains 35 W devices in both DPAK and D²PAK formats.

The availability of multiple resistance values within a single kit can reduce repeated sample requests and allow engineers to compare alternatives during prototyping. Values are selected from the E-series and range from 1 Ω to 47 kΩ. Resistors are supplied on cardboard tape strips, with four components per strip, arranged in ascending resistance order and labelled for identification.

For laboratory evaluation, optional PCB test boards provide a ready platform for electrical and thermal measurements. This can shorten setup time when assessing resistor behaviour under high-power conditions.

The resistors use a non-inductive construction, which helps maintain predictable behaviour in high-frequency circuits. Electrical isolation between the resistive element and metal tab further supports safe integration. Their compatibility with standard surface-mount assembly, including reflow resistance up to 270°C for 10 seconds, can also simplify manufacturing integration.
