With ultra-low power loss, robust noise immunity, and up to 2MHz switching capability, it marks a major step toward compact, energy-efficient systems across both industrial and consumer sectors.

High-Speed Gate Driver IC

ROHM has unveiled its new isolated gate driver IC – the BM6GD11BFJ-LB, built specifically to drive 600V-class GaN HEMTs (High Electron Mobility Transistors). This IC is aimed at high-frequency, high-speed switching applications like motors and server power supplies where both efficiency and miniaturization are key.

The key features are:

  • Gate drive voltage range: 4.5V to 6.0V
  • Isolation voltage: 2500Vrms
  • Compatible with wide range of high-voltage GaN HEMTs, including 650V EcoGaN™ series
  • Minimum pulse width: 65ns (33% shorter than typical ICs) for precise duty cycle control
  • Reduces switching power loss significantly
  • Ultra-low output-side current consumption: 0.5mA max
  • Helps lower standby power and boosts system efficiency

With energy-saving becoming a global priority – especially in motors and power supplies which consume around 97% of the world’s electricity – the shift toward wide bandgap devices like GaN and SiC is crucial. These devices are known for their superior efficiency in power conversion. It incorporates proprietary on-chip isolation technology, minimizing parasitic capacitance and enabling operation up to 2MHz. This means the driver can take full advantage of GaN’s speed, while also shrinking the size of surrounding components.

To ensure robust and stable performance, the IC boasts CMTI of 150V/ns, which is 1.5x better than previous-generation drivers. This means it’s highly resistant to electrical noise from fast voltage transitions — a common issue in GaN systems. The BM6GD11BFJ-LB is already available through distributors like DigiKey and Mouser, with samples priced at $4.00 (excluding tax).

This gate driver IC is ideal for a wide range of applications. In the industrial sector, it suits PV inverters, energy storage systems (ESS), base stations, and industrial motors. On the consumer side, it supports efficient operation in AC adapters, personal computers, televisions, air conditioners, and refrigerators.
