A humanoid robot has entered an industrial training facility to learn manufacturing tasks, marking a step towards planned large-scale deployment across future factory operations.
Hexagon Robotics and Schaeffler have placed AEON, a humanoid robot, inside Schaeffler’s Humanoid Gym in Germany to learn and validate industrial tasks. The collaboration is aimed at preparing the robot for manufacturing environments as the companies work towards a planned deployment of at least 1,000 humanoids.
The Humanoid Gym provides a controlled environment where AEON can develop capabilities needed for factory operations before being introduced into production. The facility is designed to connect robot capability development with the practical requirements of industrial users, helping identify and validate tasks in realistic settings.
The programme follows a three-stage train, validate and deploy model. Capabilities are first taught to AEON, then assessed in the training environment before the robot is considered ready for industrial application. This approach is intended to reduce the gap between developing robotic skills and applying them to manufacturing work.
For Schaeffler, the facility also provides an opportunity to build internal expertise around humanoid robots. Employees can develop experience in operating, training and integrating the machines into industrial processes while AEON’s capabilities evolve.
The partners are targeting deployment of at least 1,000 AEON humanoids, although no specific timeline has been disclosed. They have also not yet detailed which manufacturing capabilities the robot will learn first or which tasks it will initially perform.
The planned scale means preparation must extend beyond the robots themselves. Schaeffler will need personnel capable of training humanoids, overseeing their operation and integrating them into existing production processes. The Humanoid Gym is intended to develop this organisational readiness alongside robot capabilities.
The collaboration reflects growing efforts to move humanoid robots from demonstrations into practical industrial environments. By combining structured training with factory-specific validation, Hexagon Robotics and Schaeffler aim to establish a foundation for wider adoption of humanoid automation in manufacturing.
