Immersion-Cooled Battery Targets Electric Vessels

Can marine batteries deliver high power without adding thermal risks or taking up more space? An immersion-cooled system targets all three challenges.

XING Mobility has launched the IMMERSIO Matrix, an immersion-cooled battery system designed for electric vessels, combining continuous 3C discharge, higher energy density, and cell-level thermal management.

The system is designed for marine applications where battery power, available space, and thermal safety can directly affect vessel design. Its continuous 3C discharge capability allows the battery to support high-power operating cycles and rapid charging between trips, targeting applications such as ferries and port service vessels.

The battery uses an immersion-cooling architecture in which cells are submerged in a dielectric coolant. Rather than transferring heat indirectly through a cold plate, the coolant surrounds the cells and removes heat directly from their surfaces. The architecture is also designed to limit thermal propagation between cells in the event of a thermal runaway.

The company says the system provides twice the energy density of conventional marine batteries, allowing vessels to store more energy within a similar weight or space envelope. This can be particularly relevant to electric vessel conversions, where battery capacity must fit within an existing hull and engine-room layout.

The system is offered in scalable configurations ranging from 60kWh to 400kWh. It also incorporates a unified architecture in which cooling, structural support, safety, and battery control are integrated into the system.

The technology has already been deployed in marine applications. XING’s battery system is powering the zero-emission Porrima P111 vessel, while another system was integrated into an electric boat developed by Austrian company Smart IQ, with system integration testing completed in April 2026. The marine battery system is currently undergoing DNV certification.
