Monash University researchers say rapid advances in legged robotics are creating significant ethical, legal and social challenges alongside technical progress. Published in Science Robotics, the study examines how increasingly capable humanoid and quadrupedal robots could transform workplaces, healthcare, public services and military operations while highlighting the need for stronger governance and accountability.

The researchers argue that improvements in hardware, locomotion, autonomy, data processing and practical applications are accelerating the deployment of intelligent machines. As robots become more capable of operating independently, they are expected to take on a wider range of tasks previously carried out by people.

The study highlights concerns about the growing use of robots in care settings. Machines equipped with cameras and sensors could assist older adults and people with disabilities, but they also raise questions about privacy, surveillance and emotional dependence. The authors caution that greater reliance on robotic companions could reduce human interaction and alter how people relate to one another.

Military applications present another major challenge. According to the researchers, legged robots may lower the psychological barriers to conflict by distancing people from direct combat. Determining legal responsibility for decisions made by autonomous systems also becomes increasingly complex, particularly where civilian harm or human rights issues arise.

Economic impacts are another focus. While automation promises productivity gains, the researchers warn that widespread deployment could displace workers, particularly in service industries, and deepen existing inequalities unless governments prepare for the transition.

The authors conclude that the greatest challenge is not the technology itself but the policies governing its development and use. They argue that public oversight, transparent regulation and democratic accountability should guide the adoption of advanced legged robots, ensuring innovation delivers benefits while reducing potential risks to society.
