Microchip Technology Inc. has recently announced TrustFLEX ECC608 and Trust Anchor TA10, Qi 1.3 compatible hardware security modules (HSM). The TrustFLEX ECC608 is an industrial grade product with a pre-configured key for Qi 1.3 authentication while the TA 100 is a CryptoAutomotive security IC is developed for automotive security applications. Both the ICs provide support for secure boot and multiple key management protocols such as Transport Layer Security (TLS). The new secure storage subsystem offers secure key provisioning including X.509 certificates to cryptographically verify the source and quality of the certified power transmitter

Qi 1.3 is the latest major upgrade by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It ensures high-quality wireless charging by controlling the power transfer and mandates a hardware-based authentication. The authentication offers secure key provisioning including X.509 certificates to cryptographically verify the source and quality of the certified power transmitter. A receiver, e.g. in a smartphone when placed on a charger can accept up to a 5W charge, only after a successful X.509 based ECC authentication proving the charger is an approved, “do no harm” device, the receiver can accept a much faster 15W charge.

These new ICs come pre-configured with secure storage subsystem solutions that reduce complexity and development time, by providing a complete certified reference design and managing the entire key ceremony with the WPC root certificate.

According to the company, Microchip is now a WPC licensed manufacturing Certificate Authority (CA). “Our WPC secure storage subsystem solutions demonstrate Microchip’s continuous commitment to facilitating high volume deployment of state-of-the-art security architectures within embedded systems,” said Nuri Dagdeviren, V.P. of the security products business unit at Microchip Technology. “We work every day to lower the barrier of entry into this complex but essential technology for our customers in the wireless charging market.”

Both the TrustFLEX ECC608 and Trust Anchor TA10 are available for purchase starting at $0.90 and $1.50 respectively.
