What if a USB dock could also become a programmable test bench with swappable modules for measurement, power, and prototyping?

DockFrame is a modular USB Type C hub that extends the functionality of the Framework Expansion Card ecosystem by combining a desktop docking station with interchangeable electronics development and test modules. Designed to work with Framework laptops, desktops, and other USB Type C hosts, the platform enables users to repurpose existing expansion cards while adding bench instruments through dedicated Tool Cards.

The concept targets engineers, makers, and embedded developers who often require separate equipment for connectivity, measurement, and prototyping. By integrating these capabilities into a single modular device, DockFrame aims to simplify workspace organisation while reducing the need for standalone laboratory tools. 

The open hardware approach also allows developers to design custom expansion cards or build software that communicates through USB serial, Wi Fi, Bluetooth, ESP NOW, and other supported interfaces.

The hub supports USB 3.2 connectivity with USB Type C DisplayPort and Power Delivery passthrough of up to 100W on downstream ports. Optional Tool Cards include a multimeter capable of measuring DC voltage up to 60V, current up to 3.2A, along with resistance, capacitance, and inductance, featuring 5kV electrical isolation and an ESP32 S3 controller.

A programmable power supply module delivers adjustable output from 0.8V to 22V at up to 8A using USB Power Delivery input. Other modules include a Mini Hub Card providing four additional USB 3.0 ports and a BreadBoard Card compatible with the Seeed Studio XIAO development board family, featuring onboard power regulation and protection circuitry.

The project is being developed as open source hardware, with plans to release PCB designs, firmware, browser applications, and mechanical design files after its crowdfunding campaign. The hardware will be licensed under CERN OHL S, while the firmware will be released under the MIT license, enabling community driven development and future expansion of the platform.
