The latest innovation introduces compact and high-efficiency dual-output LCD bias power supplies designed to prolong the lifespan of TFT-LCD panels in smartphones, tablets, VR headsets, and LCD modules.

Nexperia has unveiled a series of compact, high-efficiency dual-output LCD bias power supplies. These devices are engineered to significantly extend the lifespan of thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, which are widely used in smartphones, tablets, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and LCD modules. The NEX10000 and NEX10001 are the stars of this innovative product line. Both devices come equipped with I²C programmable asymmetric voltage outputs, ensuring optimal performance and adaptability for various applications. What sets these power supplies apart is their internal compensation design, requiring just a single inductor for both outputs. This unique feature not only reduces the bill of materials but also conserves precious PCB space in compact electronic devices.

The key specifications of the two devices are as follows:

  • Current Output: 80 mA and 220 mA
  • Input Voltage Range: 4 V to 6 V, 4 V to 6.5 V
  • Output Voltage Range: ~4 V to ~6 V
  • Peak Efficiency: 86% at 40 mA combined output and 5% at 80 mA combined output
  • Form factor: 1.16 × 1.96 × 0.62 mm.

The company has taken miniaturisation to the next level by providing the devices in a wafer-level chip scale package (WLCSP) with a mere 15 bumps. This package is notably smaller than standard wafer-level offerings, making it perfect for space-constrained applications. To address the crucial aspect of power efficiency and battery life in TFT-LCD applications, they feature an internal boost converter. Depending on the load current, it can operate in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or pulse frequency modulation mode (PFM), ensuring the highest level of efficiency possible. This reduction in device current consumption plays a pivotal role in extending the life of single-cell Li-ion, Ni-Li, and Li-polymer batteries.

Both devices offer an input voltage range of 2.7 V to 5 V and deliver exceptional line and load transient responses, resulting in reduced output ripple and more stable images, ultimately prolonging the LCD’s operational lifespan. The new dual-output LCD bias power supplies are poised to revolutionise the electronics industry by offering enhanced efficiency, compactness, and extended device lifespans. These products are set to become integral components in the ever-evolving world of handheld electronic devices and displays.

Irene Deng, General Manager of the Power and Signal Conversion Business Group at Nexperia, expressed her excitement about the launch, highlighting how these LCD bias ICs align with Nexperia’s commitment to meeting the demands of small-sized, high-performance electronic devices. Deng also emphasized the NEX10000/1’s high accuracy output and efficiency, attributes that not only extend battery life but also enhance the longevity of the display.
