FARO CREAFORM Launches MetraSCAN BLACK2 to Enhance Flexibility for Shop-Floor Shop-Floor Dimensional Inspection

FARO Creaform has launched the MetraSCAN BLACK2, a portable metrology-grade optical 3D scanner for quality inspection on the shop floor. The system combines three inspection methods in a single device, supporting C-Track scanning for large components, stand-alone scanning for use in confined spaces, and probing when paired with the HandyPROBE.

The scanner is designed for quality control and quality assurance teams that need to inspect parts of different sizes in different production environments. It provides metrology-grade measurements under real-world manufacturing conditions and supports multiple inspection workflows without requiring separate systems.

The MetraSCAN BLACK2 uses 46 blue laser lines and captures up to 2.8 million measurements per second. According to the company, it offers about 56% faster data acquisition than the previous generation. Its scanning volume has increased to 46.7m³, allowing larger components to be inspected with fewer setups. The system also includes automatic shutter control, a single-cable connection, and setup assistance tools.

Compared to the earlier MetraSCAN BLACK+ and BLACK+ Elite models, the new scanner adds stand-alone scanning for greater portability and supports scanning and probing within the same workflow. It also provides higher scanning speed, greater data density, and more flexibility for inspecting parts of different sizes. The system has been calibrated in ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories and tested according to ISO 10360 and VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 standards.

“MetraSCAN BLACK2 was developed to give manufacturers a more adaptable inspection solution without compromising certified accuracy,” said Olivier Plamondon, Technical Product Manager at FARO CREAFORM. “By combining C-Track scanning, stand-alone scanning, and probing in a single metrology-grade system, we are helping quality teams work more efficiently across a broader range of parts and shop-floor conditions.”
