Real-Time Support For Embedded Systems

SYSGO’s PikeOS real-time operating system and hypervisor can now run on Kontron’s VX3060 rugged VPX plug-in card through a validated Board Support Package (BSP). The card is based on 11th Generation Intel Core processors and is intended for embedded systems used in defence, transportation, industrial automation, and other applications that require real-time operation, security, and workload separation.

The BSP supports the main hardware interfaces of the VX3060, including Ethernet, UART, thermal sensors, voltage monitoring sensors, and mass storage. It allows developers to use PikeOS on the VX3060 as well as on Kontron systems such as the HARAKAN-F2, which incorporates the card.

PikeOS can work as a secure hypervisor or as a hypervisor combined with a real-time operating system. This allows developers to run applications with different criticality levels on the same processor while keeping their memory and execution environments separated.

For example, real-time functions can run alongside Linux, middleware, and other application environments without requiring separate hardware for each workload. This can help reduce the number of computing units in a system, along with its complexity, size, weight, power consumption, and lifecycle costs.

The VX3060 and HARAKAN-F systems are designed for operation in harsh environments. Adding PikeOS support gives developers a software platform for building mixed-criticality systems where critical functions need to remain isolated from other workloads.

The BSP also reduces the work needed during system bring-up, when developers establish communication between the operating system and the hardware. This can shorten the software integration phase and provide a starting point for systems that require safety or security certification.

Platform security features can be added based on customer requirements. These include Trusted Platform Module (TPM) integration and Secure Boot, which can be used to protect platform integrity and address cybersecurity requirements.
