An E-Ink device combines touch, wireless connectivity, storage, and battery support for reading, displays, and IoT projects.

M5Stack has launched PaperMono, a compact development terminal based on the ESP32-S3R8 for low-power information display, interaction, and connected Internet of Things (IoT) projects. The device combines a 3.97-inch 4-level grayscale E-Ink display, touch input, frontlight, Near Field Communication (NFC), LoRa, microSD storage, real-time clock (RTC), inertial measurement unit (IMU), Wi-Fi, and a 1150mAh battery.
The E-Ink display is designed for low-power operation and provides a paper-like viewing experience. Touch input allows users to interact with the display, while the built-in frontlight supports use in low-light environments.
PaperMono also supports CrossPoint Reader firmware, providing another option for using the device as a compact E-Ink reader.
For connected applications, NFC and LoRa provide different communication options. NFC can be used for applications such as digital badges and identity displays, while LoRa supports longer-range, low-power applications such as remote messages and sensor status displays.
The ESP32-S3R8, along with microSD storage, RTC, IMU, Wi-Fi, and the built-in battery, provides a platform for developing and testing E-Ink projects. The device can be used for applications including mini E-Ink readers, low-power dashboards, NFC badges, LoRa remote status displays, electronic signage, access-control terminals, and smart transportation terminals.
M5Stack also offers PaperMono-Lite for makers who do not need NFC or LoRa. It retains the 3.97-inch touch E-Ink display, frontlight, and ESP32-S3R8 platform, while leaving out the two connectivity features.
PaperMono is intended for projects that need an E-Ink display and interaction along with near-field identification or long-range, low-power communication. PaperMono-Lite focuses on E-Ink development without NFC and LoRa.
