A connector helps AI data centres fit more fibre connections into limited space while simplifying installation, maintenance, and servicing.

Molex has introduced VersaBeam Mini, an optical connector that packs 16 fibres into a 3.5 × 9 mm footprint for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres and networking systems. The connector combines Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology with a Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) to increase optical density while allowing individual connections to be serviced.
Designed for applications including co-packaged optics (CPO), optical backbones, and front-panel switches, VersaBeam Mini provides three times the density of Molex’s VersaBeam 16 connectivity. A standard 1RU panel can accommodate up to 3,456 fibres using the connector, according to Molex.
The 16-fibre configuration also limits the number of connections affected during maintenance. Molex says this provides a nine-fold reduction in blast radius, allowing technicians to isolate, reroute, or hot-swap individual 16-channel lanes rather than disturbing a larger group of connections.
For faster rack deployment, an optional mass-insertion mechanism allows up to nine VersaBeam Mini connectors, carrying 144 fibres in total, to be engaged with a single push. The design retains 16-channel-level serviceability after installation while maintaining 1RU packing density.
The form factor addresses two constraints in AI data centre hardware: limited space on front panels and limited room for optical routing inside equipment chassis. By increasing the number of fibres that can be accommodated in a given area, the connector is designed to support higher optical densities without requiring additional panel space.
VersaBeam Mini uses EBO technology, which expands the optical beam between mating connectors. This makes the connection less sensitive to dust and debris and reduces the need for frequent cleaning and inspection.
The company claims that its VersaBeam EBO technology can reduce deployment and maintenance overhead by up to 85%. The approach also allows technicians to service optical links without specialised optical equipment. Laser eye safety features are intended to provide protection during maintenance and system upgrades.
The connector is also designed for automated optical cable assembly. Its groove-based 3M EBO Ferrule design eliminates the need for guide pins and holes, allowing high-speed robotic pick-and-place equipment to be used during manufacturing.
