Superconducting Quantum Computing Facility Takes Shape

What could strengthen India’s quantum computing capabilities? A large-scale superconducting system is set to support research, software, and deployment.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Bengaluru is preparing to launch a 108-qubit superconducting quantum computing facility in Electronics City, Bengaluru, as part of India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM). S D Sudarsan, Executive Director, C-DAC Bengaluru, told Analytics India Magazine that the facility is expected to be formally launched within the next two to three months.

The facility is being developed with funding from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), with the computing system supplied by Rigetti Computing India P L, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rigetti Computing. Civil works and computing infrastructure for the installation are already in place.

The system is intended to strengthen India’s domestic quantum computing capabilities by providing access to a larger superconducting quantum processor for research and development. C-DAC Bengaluru is also contributing to the NQM’s broader computing and communication programmes, linking hardware development with software, skills, and deployment efforts.

The facility will form part of a wider quantum technology ecosystem being developed across India. The NQM covers quantum computing, communication, sensing, metrology, materials, and devices, with different academic and research hubs leading individual areas. C-DAC Bengaluru participates in the computing hub and operates technical groups focused on quantum computing and communication.

Beyond the superconducting system, C-DAC is developing quantum software and training programmes. Its Quiniverse quantum simulator, developed with IISc and other partners, has more than 15,000 users, according to Sudarsan.

C-DAC is also working on quantum communication, including a Bengaluru-Chennai quantum key distribution link. Fibre characterisation and repeater installation have been completed, with a demonstration targeted before the end of 2026.

“Before the end of this year, 2026, you will see Bengaluru and Chennai doing a quantum key exchange and communicating on a fibre,” says S D Sudarsan, Executive Director, C-DAC Bengaluru.
