The SoCs, boasting features such as Bluetooth Low Energy, IoT security, and energy efficiency, position themselves as options for battery-powered devices.

Silicon Labs have announced a new family of systems on chips (SoCs) optimized for Amazon Sidewalk, the SG23 and SG28 SoCs. The company claims that the SoCs are designed with a diverse portfolio that includes specific device families and variations tailored for different components, such as the BG series for Bluetooth SoCs, the ZG series for Z-Wave SoCs, and the newly introduced SG series for Amazon Sidewalk. Amazon Sidewalk devices incorporate Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) alongside one of the extended-range protocols, either Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) or Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS). Its minimal power consumption in active and sleep modes makes it perfect for battery-driven devices like door, window, and temperature sensors. Furthermore, with a specialized security core that supports Secure Vault High, the device offers top-tier IoT security, safeguarding both the device and wireless data against potential threats, whether remote or local.

The device, equipped with multiple cores, boasts an efficient ARM Cortex-M33 processor that operates at speeds up to 78 MHz. The SG28 stands out by featuring dual-band SoCs equipped with both sub-GHz FSK and LE radios. This dual capability allows manufacturers to streamline their devices and reduce costs by combining the two most prevalent radios for Sidewalk devices into a single unit. On the other hand, the SG23 offers enhanced security and a powerful sub-GHz connection, making it ideal for long-distance, end-point devices.

Some of the common specifications of the SoCs include:

  • ARM Cortex®-M33 (78 MHz) with DSP and FPU
  • 16-bit Analog to Digital Converter (ADC)
  • 2 × Analog Comparator (ACMP)
  • 2 x Digital to Analog Converter (VDAC)
  • 8 Channel DMA Controller
  • 12-Channel Peripheral Reflex System (PRS)
  • 2 × Watchdog Timer
  • Die temperature sensor
  • TX power up to +20 dBm
  • 1.71 to 3.8 V single power supply
  • -40 °C to +125 °C

“Amazon Sidewalk brings many unique features for device developers, along with several unique requirements,” said Jake Alamat, Senior Vice President of Home and Life IoT at Silicon Labs. “By working closely with Amazon, we’ve been a leader in arming developers with the hardware, software, and development tools they need to navigate the Amazon Sidewalk development process.”
