For designers protecting sensitive electronics, this fuse technology offers fast and very fast response options in space constrained surface mount packages.

As electronic designs become more compact and power dense, protecting sensitive circuits from overloads without adding bulk or resistance remains a key challenge. Designers increasingly need fuse solutions that respond quickly and predictably, while fitting into space constrained layouts and maintaining long term reliability.

Vishay Intertechnology has addressed this requirement with the introduction of two thin film chip fuse series, the S2F and S3F. Developed under the company, the devices are designed to ensure circuit continuity with low resistance during normal operation and reliable interruption under overload conditions.

The S2F and S3F series are offered in 0402, 0603, and 1206 case sizes and support rated currents from 0.315 A to 7 A. Both series are compliant with UL 248 14 and are engineered to limit body temperature rise to below 75 °C at 100 percent rated current. This helps maintain stability and reliability even in compact, thermally sensitive designs. The fuses are also lead free, halogen free and RoHS compliant.

The main distinction between the two series lies in their response time under overload conditions. The S2F series provides fast acting protection, opening in less than one minute at 200 percent overload. The S3F series offers very fast acting protection, opening in less than five seconds under the same conditions. This allows designers to choose between tolerance for brief overloads or rapid interruption for highly sensitive circuits.

Key features include

  • Thin film chip fuse construction with low resistance
  • Fast and very fast acting options for tailored protection
  • Current ratings from 0.315 A to 7 A
  • 0402, 0603, and 1206 package sizes
  • UL 248 14 compliance with controlled temperature rise

With precise fusing behaviour, multiple footprint options, and broad current coverage, both the series give designers greater flexibility in implementing reliable secondary circuit protection across a wide range of electronic applications.
