Tiny RF connectors save PCB space, leaving more room for other components and making wireless device testing easier.

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has launched the SWL series MM8330-2600RJ5 and MM8330-2600RK20. The company claims that they are the world’s smallest RF/microwave coaxial connectors with a switch. In comparison with Murata’s previous SWJ series, the connectors can reduce the PCB mounting area by approximately 40%. The SWL series can further reduce its PCB footprint, including the keep-out area, when used with dedicated probes. The reduction is approximately 60% compared with the previous SWJ series.
As more functionality is included in wireless devices, the component count increases, along with the pressure on the limited PCB space. The RF test connectors require mounting area for the connector and also sufficient clearance around the component for probe access during circuit measurements.
The press release talks about a proprietary structure that combines RF and mechanical design technologies. The SWL connector measures only 1 mm × 1 mm × 0.55 mm and hence has more room on the PCB for other components. Less space is needed for testing, so you can use more of the board for electronic components. The connector is designed to minimise signal loss and remain mechanically strong, despite being smaller.
The component can handle high-frequency electrical signals of up to 15 GHz. These signals are used in wireless communication and other electronic systems. It can work with signals ranging from zero frequency (DC) to 15 GHz. A 50 Ω impedance is the electrical resistance level the component is designed to work with, helping signals travel properly through the circuit.
The product is mainly designed for companies that design and manufacture smartphones, wearable devices and other wireless electronic products. They can use it to test wireless signals inside their circuit boards while saving space.
