An impressive range of fixed-direction voltage level translators, the NXU series, has been developed by Nexperia, Nijmegen offering solutions to streamline communication between host processors and peripheral devices. These translators are specifically tailored for push-pull data interfaces, such as UART, SPI, JTAG protocols, and general-purpose input/ output (I/O) applications.

Traditionally, direction-controlled translators rely on additional GPIO pins for direction management, leading to increased complexity and larger device sizes. Moreover, such designs consume significant I/O resources from host processors, making them less efficient. In contrast, auto-direction devices eliminate the GPIO pin requirement but fall short in providing sufficient current drive. These devices can also suffer from unpredictable I/O behaviour, complicating debugging processes.

The NXU series addresses these limitations by integrating the strengths of both direction-controlled and auto-direction architectures. These translators deliver higher data rates (up to 250Mbps), robust drive strength, and glitch-free power sequencing while significantly reducing power consumption by over 50% compared to conventional auto-direction devices. Engineers and developers in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, industrial automation, and enterprise systems can particularly benefit from these compact and flexible designs, which are tailored for both power-sensitive and high-performance applications.

Additionally, the NXU translators operate across a wide voltage range of 0.9V to 5.5V, enabling seamless compatibility across multiple voltage nodes. This flexibility makes them ideal for applications where compact, high-performance solutions are crucial. “These devices simplify designs without compromising efficiency or performance,” say researchers involved in the development. Automotive-certified variants, equipped with side-wettable flanks, further enhance adaptability by supporting automated optical inspections.

The NXU family complements existing translation solutions by offering tailored options for applications requiring both auto-direction and fixed-direction capabilities. This innovative approach represents a significant leap toward optimising modern device designs for power-sensitive environments and complex system architectures.

The new voltage translators showcase how research and engineering advancements continue to bridge gaps in technology, fostering streamlined and cost-effective designs for evolving industry demands.
