What happens when a missed wafer read interrupts production? A machine-vision system uses AI and advanced imaging to keep identification moving.

Cognex has launched the In-Sight 1750 Series, a wafer and panel identification system designed to reduce production interruptions, improve traceability, and maintain throughput as semiconductor manufacturers expand fabrication capacity for AI and advanced computing.
Reliable wafer identification helps manufacturers track material through fabrication and packaging while keeping automated equipment operating without manual intervention. Missed or unreliable reads can interrupt processes, require operator troubleshooting, and affect equipment utilisation. Improving identification therefore has a direct role in maintaining production flow.
The In-Sight 1750 addresses this challenge by combining AI capabilities with advanced imaging and purpose-built illumination. The system is designed to read difficult wafer and panel markings, including degraded marks and challenging substrates that can otherwise require manual intervention.
This can help manufacturers maintain more consistent process control while reducing disruptions caused by identification failures. The approach is particularly relevant as fabs increase production volumes, where even small interruptions can affect throughput across automated manufacturing operations.
The system is designed to fit into existing production environments rather than require significant process changes. It supports job conversion for users upgrading from Cognex’s In-Sight 1740, helping simplify the transition to the newer platform. A web-based setup interface is intended to make configuration easier, while built-in read logging provides information that can support quality and process control.
The In-Sight 1750 is also positioned for manufacturers adding capacity for AI infrastructure, advanced computing, and next-generation electronics. By combining identification, imaging, and AI capabilities in one platform, the system is intended to support wafer traceability as production requirements increase.
“Investment in AI infrastructure is driving a new wave of expansion across the semiconductor industry, and chipmakers are being asked to bring new capacity online faster than ever while maintaining the highest quality standards,” says Matt Moschner, President and CEO, Cognex. “The In-Sight 1750 combines our latest AI technology with decades of semiconductor expertise to help manufacturers scale production without sacrificing quality or traceability.”
