Open-Source Collaboration Accelerates Worldwide

GitHub’s Q1 2026 Innovation Graph reports strong growth in global open source collaboration, with India strengthening its position as one of the platform’s largest developer communities.

GitHub’s Q1 2026 Innovation Graph reveals that global open source collaboration continued to soar in the first quarter of 2026 with outbound collaboration growing 16 per cent quarter-over-quarter from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026. As per the report, this is the second-highest quarter-to-quarter growth rate since 2020 and reflects increased collaboration between global economies. India remained one of GitHub’s important regions.

The report revealed that more 26.7 million Indian developers and over 764,000 organisations from India are building on GitHub. In Q1 2026, code uploads by developers from India were over 44.6 million and over 69.2 million repositories belonged to developers in India. In terms of outbound collaboration where the number of git pushes and pull requests are counted as the number of collaborative transactions sent to public repositories in other economies, India’s top collaborators were the US, Germany and the UK. Among all programming languages used by Indian developers who upload code, JavaScript was the most popular language followed by Python and TypeScript.

The GitHub Innovation Graph offers longitudinal metrics on software development in the public domain in the form of developer engagement, repositories, organisations, git pushes, and collaboration among world economies. As stated by the company, the first quarter of 2026 had the highest level of collaboration growth, compared to any other quarter since Q2 2020, with the exception of the time period associated with the rise in remote software development when the COVID-19 pandemic started.

In addition, the report also highlighted regional developments. Syria recorded significant growth since Q4 2025 as the company increased access to its services after the sanctions and export restrictions have been lifted. As per GitHub, over 8,000 verified students from Syria got their GitHub Student Developer Pack over the last six months.

In order to assist maintainers to handle increasing numbers of contributions, GitHub also highlighted repository management features including pull request limits, repository-level pull request and issues controls, pinned issue comments, comment noise reduction banners, improved performance of pull requests, improved issue navigation, and temporary interaction limits for public repositories.
