XR technology could help address skilled worker shortages

New research explores AI-powered XR assistance that could help visually impaired professionals overcome workplace barriers, retain expertise and strengthen labour-market participation in demanding professional roles.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) are developing the AssistiveXR4Work system, using extended-reality (XR) glasses and artificial intelligence to support visually impaired people at work.

The project aims to address both workplace accessibility and the shortage of skilled workers by helping qualified professionals remain in employment when visual impairments make everyday tasks difficult. Researchers say conventional aids can reach their limits beyond the computer workstation, particularly when workers need to read labels, interpret handwritten information or navigate unfamiliar environments.

AssistiveXR4Work is designed to recognise or magnify visual information automatically and present it according to an individual’s vision requirements. The system can also read information aloud. For example, it could recognise and enlarge the contents of a whiteboard during a meeting or convert handwritten notes into plain text for further processing.

In engineering environments, the technology could assist with orientation and highlight relevant components. The XR glasses use a high-resolution camera to continuously capture the surrounding environment, while artificial intelligence helps interpret what the wearer encounters.

The initiative is aimed at supporting skilled professionals whose careers could otherwise be disrupted by deteriorating vision. The project notes that highly skilled employees may lose their jobs or need to change fields when their visual abilities decline.

Research cited in the article indicates that severe disabilities are widespread in Germany, with the probability of remaining in the labour force five years after a disability begins falling significantly.

The project plans to develop an operational demonstrator over the next four years before testing it in practice. If successful, the approach could help visually impaired workers maintain greater independence while allowing employers to retain experienced and skilled staff.
